New Lice Treatment Recommendations from the AAP
Posted on Jul 28, 2010
"No-Nit" policies at school and mass school screenings for lice have been shown to be completely ineffective and needlessly keep children out of school. Head lice is actually the leading cause of school absenteeism in the Untied States! We have tried with some, though not complete, success to convince the local school systems to abandon them. Hopefully, these new "official" guidelines will put an end to these misguided, though well-intentioned, policies.
Here is a link to ABC News which had a nice little summary of the report: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/ParentingResourceCenter/lice-recommendations-issued-aap/story?id=11239623
What we would like parents to remember about lice is that they are just bugs in the hair. They are a nuisance and nothing more. They do not cause disease. They are not a sign of lack of cleanliness nor should anyone feel embarrassed by them. I think everyone of the physicians here at some time or another has had to deal with lice with their own children.
